Gameplay:

Control gibbable tactical combat units in a 2D sideview physics battlefield where every pixel is destroyable and all interactions are physics driven! Bodies and wreckage will pile up, with permanent damage left on the battlefield with each bullet fired! Battle damage is brutal and units will often explode into a shower of blood, oil or twisted metal.

Your goal is to fight against AI-controlled mercenary armies, each armed with randomized weapon loadouts in 37 diverse campaign missions plus over 40 different skirmish maps where you can fully customize with your own bunkers, starting forces, tanks, turrets, doors, module systems and even decide winning conditions! Thats right, you can win skirmish battles now!*

You can order new soldiers, guns, tools and devices via space delivery to any battlefield at any time during combat - as much as you want! You get the full freedom to choose what kind of loadout and squad you will use to complete the mission, making the game have virtually infinite combinations for each map you play - the game is endlessly replayable! No battle is ever the same!

You can play stealthy, go in guns blazing, dig tunnels, use experimental tactics, fight as a lone wolf badass operator or as a small squad of 2-5 units that you can freely switch between at any time, while AI keeps your other units ready to shoot at enemies they encounter.

The possibilities are endless, all interactions are emergent and dynamic, you will never know what kind of hilarious or cool moments will happen in this chaotic arcade combat game! The combat is really fun in this game!

Technology:

Built upon the carcass of an ancient long lost abandonware version of Cortex Command Build 23 that is no longer supported nor available, this version has been thoroughly remixed, unlocked and reloaded with my own custom work. All original maps have been overhauled, meanwhile the default gameplay revolves around my custom mercenary mod that features enhanced gore and gibbing effects for that extra satisfying death and destruction. I've also thrown in some custom extra content and re-enabled hidden vanilla content. This stuff is not available anywhere else.

Most vanilla content has been rebalanced dramatically, so the entire game plays very differently compared to the original lost version. Turrets, doors, craft and even the dreadnought crab tank are now much more formidable. Mod compatibility is kept intact for any B23 mods, so they can be loaded fine without anything breaking. All music, intro slides, terrain textures and backgrounds have been changed too. Even the main menu, GUI and planet have had changes!

On the flipside, this also means that old problems of CC are still here and unfixable. However, the game *is* still relatively stable to play even for longer battles but don't be surprised if it crashes sometimes. Theres also some hardcoded things that I cannot change or fix, but its definitely still playable enough to have great fun with it.

Keep in mind you will not find here any fog of war mechanics, disabled friendly fire, conquest mode, strobing epilepsy light every time your brain unit is hit nor any other amazing "enhancements" present in the last final version of the game. This customized Remix version is honestly what I consider the peak of the modding scene and development state of the game before it started to go bad.

Installation:

This is a portable app, so you can simply unzip to any folder you want, even on a portable USB drive, and play anywhere on any regular Windows computer with a just a keyboard. It should work both on old and new versions of Windows.

If you're installing B23 mods, simply place any .rte folder inside the game folder and check inside the newly placed .rte folder that it has an "index.ini" file directly inside it. That will signal to you that the mod will be detected and picked up by the game. Note: mods from older or newer version of CC may not work.

How to play:

To play, double-click the "Cortex Command.exe", watch the intro, then on the main menu press Campaign and go with the first selection it gave you. After completing the revamped tutorial mission go back to campaign screen to select any flickering yellow dot to select that campaign mission. Theres 37 to choose from!

Alternatively, click on Skirmish Battle, choose One Player, select the skirmish scene from the drop down menu (they're all different playable maps), stay as Red Team, press Start Skirmish, select CPU difficulty (easiest is spawn enemy every 30 seconds, hardest is spawn enemy every 6 seconds. thats the only difference. the rest are somewhere between those).

In Campaign, you often try to destroy targets, defend for a set amount of time or try to rescue someone into space.

In Skirmish Battle, you build your bunker piece by piece, put down your commanding unit and then survive for 100, 200, 300, 400 or 500 kills. Once those quotas fill up, you can buy a special trigger from the Bombs section in the buy menu, deliver it to the ground and detonate it to score a victory. The screen will say "Fail" due to hardcoded bug, but if you check the console with § or ~ you will get a message that you actually won.

Maximum Edition:

Original Edition is the full FREE base game with the all the above cool stuff, but Maximum Edition comes included with a giant preserved mod database that I have done you the service of collecting, organizing, preserving and making it easy to access.

The Original Edition already has enough content to keep you playing for days and weeks, but the Maximum Edition's extra content allows you to extend that massively with huge loads of mod content, including new missions, new factions, new standalone mods and my very own exclusive two giant mods (Alteisen Arsenal Labs and EXTech) that have been greatly updated and aren't available anywhere else. They are enabled by default. They have a lot of overpowered stuff to have fun with!

There is a ton of passionately made playable content that otherwise would be lost to time and never ever possible to play had this Remixed Legacy version never been released - see, original future official versions killed mod compatiblity and killed the modding scene with it.

You can of course delve into the old forums to find the mods for free by yourself and download them manually, but I offer a way to skip that frustrating effort and get everything in all one clean megapack. Consider it a service of convenience for the giant amount of work I did to put all this together. Museum keepers need compensation too!

Expansion/DLC potential:

READ THE EPIC FULL EXPANSION PLAN HERE:

If I receive enough support, instead of me working on my other projects, I can redirect my focus on creating more content for you to play with this Remix, integrating mods into the base game, creating many new expansions like water scenes, lunar scenes, space scenes, special weather hazard scenes, space weather scenes, new terrain types, new bunker systems, new wildlife, new missions, new default weapons, vehicles, bombs, actors, etc.

This is a lot of work and I cannot do it without your support. You can motivate me by buying the Maximum Edition, subscribing to my patreon or donating to my AI Art BuyMeACoffee page. Once I cumulatively receive enough money to reach the stretch goal, I will get started on creating the first expansion.

Alternatively you can support the development of my own full game projects that aim to surpass the original design flaws of CC by subscribing to my patreon and leaving a comment what to work on.

Who is working on this:

Its just me, Reactorcore.

Formerly I was one of the main content developers for Cortex Command's official content until Alpha/Beta Build 26-ish. About 40% of all base content in the game (All stuff related to Ronin, Coalition, Dummies, all new skirmish maps/terrains in the later "final" versions of the game, campaign maps like Dummy Assault & Maginot defence, etc.) was originally built and designed by me.

Meanwhile, I was also an avid modder in the community and made the massive BW.rte mod that is now at the center of this Remix, along with many other large and small mods I had worked on and released, most that are available in the Maximum Edition!

I know a fair bit about the ini side of modding this game, though I'm not the strongest at Lua scripting. In regards to the expansion packs, I can confidently create all of them alone as I did with this remix release. I might as well put my years of knowledge in modding this game to good use if people like you will support it.

Enjoy the game!

May the mods live on!
